Visit of the Garni Community Delegation to Dunhuang

On October 11–14, at the invitation of the Chinese side, a delegation led by Tigran Poghosyan, Head of the Garni Community of the Kotayk Region of the Republic of Armenia, visited the city of Dunhuang, Gansu Province, People’s Republic of China.

During the visit, the delegation was received by Zhu Jianqun, Mayor of the People’s Government of Dunhuang City. In his remarks, Mayor Zhu emphasized the importance of establishing and strengthening ties between the Garni community — known for its rich cultural heritage and Dunhuang, a historic hub on the ancient Silk Road.

Mayor Poghosyan, expressing gratitude for the invitation and warm hospitality, highlighted that both communities are home to UNESCO World Heritage sites. He also extended an invitation to his Chinese counterpart to visit Garni.

On October 13, the “Global Dialogue of Mayors – Dunhuang 2025” forum was held, with the Mayor of Garni attending the opening ceremony.

During the ceremony, the mayors of Garni and Dunhuang solemnly signed a “Letter of Intent on Establishing Sister City Relations between the Garni Community of the Kotayk Region of the Republic of Armenia and the Dunhuang City of the Gansu Province of the People’s Republic of China.”

As part of the visit, the delegation also toured the Mogao Cave Complex — considered the “visiting card” of Dunhuang — as well as several cultural and tourist sites.
