An Event in China Dedicated to the 33rd Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia

20 September, 2024

On September 20, a solemn event dedicated to the 33rd anniversary of Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia was held at the Armenian Embassy in Beijing, attended by ambassadors and heads of international organizations accredited in Beijing, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from various spheres of China's social and political life, and the Armenian community, including students.

On the Chinese side, Liu Bin, a member of the Communist Party Committee of the Chinese Foreign Ministry and Assistant Foreign Minister, participated in the event as a guest of honor.

In his opening speech, Ambassador Gevorgyan noted that the long journey of our people throughout history has left us with a rich calendar of celebrations and commemorations. However, the significance of September 21 is particularly special, as it gives meaning to all other memorable days. The very survival of the Armenian nation, through the sacrifices and resilience of our ancestors, has acquired a new significance: we have survived not merely for survival's sake but for freedom and revival to be enjoyed individually and collectively on our ancestral homeland.

Addressing regional issues, Ambassador Gevorgyan presented Armenia’s approaches to establishing peace and security in the region.

In his speech ambassador noted that in recent years, under the strategic leadership of the leaders of Armenia and China, the two countries have strengthened their relations in the political, economic, and humanitarian spheres. High-level mutual visits have intensified, and bilateral trade has grown significantly, making China Armenia's second-largest trade partner. The ambassador also noted that the visa-free regime and new direct flights are boosting tourism and people-to-people ties, expressing confidence that the coming years will bring new opportunities for the development of infrastructure projects under China's Belt and Road and Armenia's Crossroads for Peace initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Liu Bin warmly congratulated the Republic of Armenia on Independence Day, noting that Armenia is an ancient civilization and that the hardworking and brave Armenian people have created a unique culture on the Eurasian continent, many manifestations of which are known all over the world.

Liu Bin remarked that today Armenia is on its path to development and is making great strides in that direction. As a good friend and partner of Armenia, China is pleased to witness these achievements.

The Chinese senior diplomat noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 32 years ago, China-Armenia relations have experienced strong and stable growth, evidenced by increasing political trust, significant progress in large-scale cooperation, and effective international coordination. Concluding his speech, Liu Bin stated that China is ready to share its development opportunities with Armenia to promote common development and revitalization.

The official part of the event was followed by a cultural segment, during which Armenian and Chinese musicians, led by Astghik Poghosyan, an Armenian violinist and member of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, performed selected pieces of national music from both countries, combining Armenian and Chinese musical instruments.

The event dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia concluded with a reception featuring national dishes.
