Participation of the Armenian Delegation in the 9th Ministerial Session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Committee on Environment and Development

From 1 to 3 July 2026, the Armenian delegation participated in the 9th Ministerial Session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Committee on Environment and Development, held in Bangkok.

The Armenian delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Environment Aram Meymaryan. The delegation also included the Special Envoy of the COP17 Presidency of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ambassador Mher Margaryan, and Armenia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Vahe Gevorgyan (based in Beijing).

Deputy Minister of Environment Aram Meymaryan, in his intervention at the ministerial roundtable, referred to Armenia’s COP17 Presidency of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, emphasizing the importance of advancing the environmental agenda and strengthening international cooperation, as well as highlighting the significance of the upcoming UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP17), to be held in Yerevan in October.

During the session titled “Accelerating Progress towards Sustainable Development through Synergistic Policies and Solutions,” Special Envoy of the COP17 Presidency Ambassador Mher Margaryan presented Armenia’s priorities for its COP17 Presidency, underlining the importance of enhancing synergies and coordination across the implementation of environmental conventions.

On the margins of the event, the Armenian delegation held meetings with Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP); Shina Ansari, Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Head of the Department of Environment; and Eugenue Zhukov, Director General of the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department of the Asian Development Bank.

The meetings discussed preparatory and substantive issues related to the upcoming CBD COP17 in Yerevan, and outlined potential areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.
